Reading Strategies

Many times when students struggle with reading it can be a very frustrating experience.  Students learn many great strategies at school, but when they are expected to carry them over into reading outside of school the strategies they learn can be quickly forgotten.  Here are some great tips of how to help your child read with more success at home.

1.  ALWAYS keep the meaning of the story as the first prompt for you child.  Asking questions such as "What is this story about?" "What would make sense in the story?" are helpful when children get "stuck".

2.  Reread- Go back and reread the line or sentence.

3.  BREAK the word into two parts.  Simply telling your child to sound out a word does not help, especially with irregular words or longer words.
